It has been a long winter, and according to the weather forecast, it is not over yet. Although it is not spring just yet, I am in need of some ‘housekeeping’. Since the holiday season I have been overindulging and then some. And if that weren’t enough, I had experienced a nasty virus that lasted over 2 weeks and I was ingesting large amounts of OT medication. I am now suffering the consequences. My poor liver, my body’s natural waste and toxin filter is overworked and underpaid. The early signs are obvious: fatigue, lethargy, hormonal imbalance, stress…..need I say more!!
As I am not a strong believer in drastic measures, I will commit to eating more foods that detox and balance the liver and less foods (and beverages) that tax the liver. The foods that cause liver fatigue are refined and processed food products, sugar and alcohol.
Foods that support and cleanse the liver:
- leafy greens
- green tea
- whole cooked grains
- olive oil
These natural foods host many liver supporting compounds such as the mineral sulfur, the protein glutathione, antioxidants, omega fatty acids, vitamin C and pectin. Adding more of these foods to your diet and limiting unhealthy foods will give your system a rest. Another healthy liver habit I include is hot water and lemon. This is a wonderful cocktail for the entire digestive system. Don’t forget fresh air, daily exercise and restful sleep. Keeping the body in balance!!
